Management of Intersexuality:
Guidelines for dealing with individuals with ambiguous genitalia.

by Milton Diamond, Ph.D., H. Keith Sigmundson, M.D.

Until recently, as described in the next section, clinical policy was to make the child appear as normal as possible, often reassigning male babies as girls. Several leading clinicians now challenge this policy, insisting, as do many adult intersexed people, that any irreversible surgical or medical interventions, beyond what is medically necessary, should not be made until the child is old enough to understand the issues and decide for itself.
Clearly this is a difficult decision for the parents to make, forseeing many future problems for the child. This page will take you to the website of the United Kingdom Intersex Association.

A good book to read is Hermaphrodites and the Medical Invention of Sex by Alice Domurat Dreger, Bookshelf published by Harvard University Press.
