FICTION:

THE DRESS CIRCLE by Laurie Graham
(Black Swan, 1998). ISBN 0-552-99760-9
A well researched novel written through the eyes of a wife which romps along.  Laurie adopts a Black Country dialect style that lends itself well to the tragi-comedy genre of this compelling little book which was featured on The Vanessa Show (July '99).

GRACE by Carrie Worrell
(Piatkus, 1998). ISBN 0-7499-3080-2
A beautifully observed piece of creative writing constructed through the eyes of the author as she tells the story of our hapless hero.  Has all the factors of a real-life situation that the reader can identify with, with no-holds-barred in the telling.  Sympathetic and realistic without fantasy or licentiousness.  Set in Manchester.

SACRED COUNTRY by Rose Tremain
(Sceptre, 1993). ISBN 0-340-56155-6
The story of a Female-to-Male Transsexual growing up in a poor farming community in Suffolk and his life struggle against family, community and the medical establishment to change gender.  A well researched and thoughtful novel which accurately portrays an FtM's journey.

NON-FICTION:

MY HUSBAND BETTY by Helen Boyd
(Thunder's Mouth Press). ISBN 1-56025-515-3
My Husband Betty is the first book to explore the relationships of crossdressing men and their female partners. Known traditionally as transvestites, men like Helen Boyd's husband are starting to come out and win the respect of friends, family, and society - even if their behavior still baffles mental health professionals and the crossdressers themselves. Boyd explains the "taxonomy" of the transgendered, the distinct societies within the transgendered community, the effects of the closet, sexuality, and the issues faced by the wives and girlfriends of crossdressing men. Helen's own experience is at the heart of this book, her story complemented and contradicted by interviews with crossdressers, drag queens, "tranny chasers," and other transgendered couples.
